The Galaxy That Survived a Collision
At first glance, Centaurus A appears almost peaceful.
A vast gathering of stars floats against the darkness, crossed by glowing lanes of cosmic dust.
But this quiet im
age hides a violent past.
Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128, is one of the nearest active galaxies to Earth. And the unusual shape we see today was not created in isolation.
Long ago, galaxies collided.
A Collision Written in the Stars
Around two billion years ago, Centaurus A experienced a major collision with another galaxy.
Gravity pulled stars, gas, and dust into new paths. Vast clouds of material were compressed and disturbed, creating conditions in which new stars could form.
The collision ended long ago.
But its story did not.
The dark and glowing structures crossing the galaxy are part of the evidence left behind — a record of an event that happened billions of years before humans ever looked toward the stars.
In a sense, we are not simply looking at a galaxy.
We are looking into its past.
Webb Looks Through the Dust
In July 2026, NASA, ESA and CSA released new images of Centaurus A captured by the James Webb Space Telescope, celebrating four years of Webb science.
Visible light cannot easily penetrate the thick lanes of dust surrounding the galaxy's central regions.
Webb sees the universe differently.
Using its near- and mid-infrared instruments, NIRCam and MIRI, Webb can peer through much of that dust, revealing individual stars and structures that were previously hidden from view.
What once appeared dark begins to reveal another universe underneath.
A Black Hole at Its Heart
At the center of Centaurus A lies another source of extraordinary activity:
a supermassive black hole.
Material surrounding the black hole is heated and accelerated as the black hole feeds, while powerful jets of energetic particles are launched far into space.
This makes Centaurus A especially valuable to astronomers.
It allows us to study something much larger than a single black hole — the relationship between black holes and the galaxies that surround them.
Over millions and billions of years, the two can influence one another, shaping the evolution of an entire galaxy.
The Universe Is Still Becoming
Centaurus A reminds us that galaxies are not permanent monuments suspended unchanged in space.
They collide.
They merge.
They create stars.
They transform.
And billions of years later, the light from those events finally reaches us.
As astronomer Edwin Hubble once wrote:
“Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.”
Perhaps that is what makes images like this so powerful.
We are seeing something that happened millions or billions of years before our own lives began.
Yet today, from one small planet orbiting one ordinary star, we have built instruments capable of reading those ancient traces of light.
Centaurus A is not simply a photograph of a distant galaxy.
It is a story written by gravity, collision, darkness, and time.
And the light has traveled millions of years to tell it.
