CHAPTER 03 — LOOK UP AT THE STARS
Stephen Hawking spent much of his life unable to walk. Yet his mind traveled to the edge of space and time.
Look Up
Sometimes, we spend so much time looking at what is directly in front of us.
The next day.
The next problem.
The next thing we have to do.
Our world can become very small without us noticing.
But every now and then, something makes us look up.
A bright Moon.
A clear winter sky.
A shooting star disappearing before we can even make a wish.
And suddenly, there is an entire universe above us.
Stephen Hawking once gave a simple piece of advice:
“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

I have always liked these words.
They sound simple.
But they came from someone whose own life made them mean something much more.
A Young Man and the Universe
Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England, in 1942.
As a young man, he went to Cambridge to study the universe.
He wanted to understand some of the biggest questions we can ask.
How did the universe begin?
What happens inside a black hole?
Where did space and time come from?
But while he was still a student, something changed.
Hawking began falling for no obvious reason.
His movements became more difficult.
After medical examinations, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
He was only 21.
Doctors initially expected that he might have only a few years to live.
Imagine hearing that at 21.
A whole future suddenly becoming uncertain.
The universe was enormous.
But his own world seemed to be getting smaller.
When the Body Could No Longer Travel
The disease slowly took away Hawking's ability to move.
Walking became difficult.
Then impossible.
Eventually, he used a wheelchair.
Later, after losing his natural speaking voice, he communicated through a computer-generated voice that became known around the world.
His physical world became increasingly limited.
But something extraordinary happened.
His mind kept going.
Far beyond Earth.
Far beyond the Solar System.
Toward places no human being could ever physically visit.
Black holes.
The beginning of the universe.
The boundaries of space and time.
While his body remained on Earth, Hawking spent his life thinking about some of the most distant places imaginable.
Into the Darkness
For a long time, black holes seemed almost perfectly dark.
Their gravity is so powerful that beyond a boundary called the event horizon, not even light can escape.
It sounds final.
Something falls in.
And it is gone.
But Hawking asked what happens when the strange rules of quantum physics are considered near a black hole.
The answer changed our understanding of them.
Black holes may not be completely black.
They can emit what became known as Hawking radiation.
Very slowly, over unimaginable periods of time, a black hole can lose energy.
And eventually, it may disappear.
I find something beautiful about that idea.
Even the darkest objects in the universe are not completely beyond change.
Even black holes have a story.
A beginning.
A lifetime.
And perhaps, eventually, an end.
Looking Back in Time
When we look at the night sky, we are never really seeing the universe as it is now.
We are seeing its past.
The Moon we see is about one second old.
The sunlight reaching our eyes began its journey about eight minutes earlier.
The light from Sirius has traveled for more than eight years.
And when telescopes observe distant galaxies, we can see light that has been traveling for millions or even billions of years.
The farther we look,
the farther back in time we see.
Perhaps that is one reason the night sky feels so strange.
It is not simply a place.
It is history.
Every point of light carries a message from another time.
A Question Worth Asking
Hawking spent his life asking questions that seem almost impossible.
Where did the universe come from?
What happens at the edge of a black hole?
Can we understand the laws that govern everything around us?
We still do not have all the answers.
Perhaps we never will.
But maybe the questions themselves matter.
Thousands of years ago, someone looked at the night sky and wondered what the stars were.
They did not know.
So humanity kept looking.
We built observatories.
Then telescopes.
Then spacecraft.
We walked on the Moon.
We sent Voyager beyond the planets.
And today, telescopes such as Hubble and Webb look billions of light-years into space.
All because someone looked up and asked:
What is out there?
Our Brief Moment
There is another part of Hawking's words that I think about.
Our lives are very short compared with the universe.
Stars can live for billions of years.
Galaxies existed long before Earth formed.
The light from some objects in our telescopes began traveling toward us before our planet even existed.
Against that kind of time, a human life is almost nothing.
And yet, here we are.
For a brief moment, we are able to see the universe.
We can learn about it.
We can wonder about it.
We can stand beneath a dark sky and understand that some of those tiny lights are suns.
That somewhere around them there may be planets.
That beyond them are billions of other stars.
And beyond those stars,
other galaxies.
Maybe being small does not make our lives meaningless.
Maybe it makes the fact that we are here to see any of this even more remarkable.
Look Up at the Stars
Stephen Hawking lived far longer than doctors first expected.
He died in 2018 at the age of 76.
By then, he had become one of the most recognizable scientists in the world.
He never traveled to a black hole.
He never reached another star.
He never left the Solar System.
But in another sense, he spent his entire life traveling through the universe.
Through mathematics.
Through imagination.
Through questions.
That may be why his words stay with me.
“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”
Maybe looking up does not mean ignoring the world around us.
Maybe it means remembering that there is more beyond the small world we see every day.
There are stars above us.
Planets.
Nebulae.
Galaxies.
Black holes.
A universe that has existed for billions of years.
And somehow, for this brief moment,
we are here to look at it.
So tonight, if the sky is clear,
look up.
